Samsung Galaxy S4 Active: Specs, release date of S4’s rugged version

At last, proving the rumors, Samsung’s reply to Sony Xperia Z has arrived. It is in the form of the much-awaited Galaxy S4 Active, which is really a slight variant of the Korean tech maker’s 2013 flagship the Galaxy S4. In fact, the rugged alternate of the handset has been in rumors for a while, and it has now gone official with IP67 certification for dust and water protection. For bringing these capabilities to the pack, Samsung has set a new design for the device with more solid materials.

Samsung says that the device has been designed to boost life experience of active phone users, who can now take it to the toughest mountain trails and rough rivers. It can be a perfect partner for users’ explorative, active and adventurous minds, Samsung has noted on its press note. In other words, the Galaxy S4 Active is simply a stiff rival to Xperia Z, Sony’s flagship with the special features for water and dust resistance.

“The Galaxy S4 Active is the newest addition to the Galaxy series and is purposefully designed for active users who love the outdoors,” said JK Shin of Samsung in a press note. “Samsung has taken the innovative features of the Galaxy S4 and added breakthrough protective design elements to create a device that thrives in an active environment and is built for a lifestyle of travel and exploration,” he added.

Though keeping some features of its original, the Galaxy S4 Active has a downgraded rear camera. From the original’s heavy 13MP main camera, it has a standard 8MP camera, which touts an “Aqua Mode” for letting users capture images and video under water with no blur and distortion. Also, different from its original’s Super AMOLED display, the Active has an LCD display, which also packs 1080p FullHD resolution.

Well, everything else with the Active is almost the same as the Galaxy S4. Besides the same display size and resolution, it mounts a 1.9 GHz quad-core Krait processor under the cover. Its 16GB internal memory can be expanded through a microSD card slot and it also have 2GB RAM capacity that will make things trouble-free for multitasking and other multimedia features.

Moreover, the Active features LTE, IR-port, NFC and a bunch of regular connectivity options including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. A 2600mAh battery is what Samsung has packed inside the ruggedized phone for better energy backup. When it comes to the operating system, it features Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean along with a range of Samsung’s native features including Air View, Air gestures, S Health, WatchON IR and a lot of similar apps.

Going be the dimensions, the Galaxy S4 Active is slightly bulkier than the original. Measuring at 139.7 x 71.3 x 9.1mm, it is somewhat thicker as well as larger than the S4 original, which has the dimensions of 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9mm. Similarly, weight has also climbed up with an increase of 21 grams to 151 grams, which indeed reasonable because a rugged phone is often made with more solid materials.

As far as its release date is concerned, Samsung is to roll out the Galaxy S4 Active in the summer. It will appear in colors like Urban Grey, Orange Flare and Dive Blue variants. Initially, the device would make its way to the U.S. and Sweden markets, said Samsung which, however, shied away from exposing its price tag.

Indeed, as we can guess, the Galaxy S4 Active may be a bit more priced than the S4, because the company would have used more valuable materials to build the ruggedized version of the device. Of course, it might be an apt phone for those, who are under tough working conditions or doing some adventurous activities like hill climbing, hiking and more.
