9 of the Best Backup Plugins for WordPress

A backup solution is very much similar to an Insurance policy, you don’t get hurt too often but when you do you have to pay a ton of cash to improve your health conditions and that’s the time when you think “I wish I had the insurance policy……”.

You don’t get hacked too often but when you do you might end up losing all your content / data. So it’s important to have a backup solution in place.

Best WordPress Backup Plugins

It’s always advised to backup your WordPress database via SQL & FTP, but if you are afraid of all the tech stuff, than use a backup plugin or service.
In the following post I’m going to share 9 of the best backup solutions for WordPress ranging from premium to free ones, so you can’t get caught in the middle of an irreversible problem.
I know there are tons of plugins & cloud services available out there to do the job, but here I’ve listed the best ones.

1. Backup Buddy

Backup Buddy plugin is developed by the amazing team at iThemes. I have been using and recommending the plugin for a few months now. The folks over at ithemes have created some awesome products including premium themes, plugins and training program. They have been building WordPress related products since 2008.
The backup plugin developed by iThemes is my go-to solution for all the backup needs. The ithemes has created a great product that not only helps with backup needs but also helps with migrating WordPress sites from one server to another.
In the last few months, they have released a number of new features to improve their backup solution such as – adding “stash” option, which is an off-site location to store the data. The stash feature comes with a free storage of 1 GB. To get extra storage, you would have to pay a certain amount every year say $35 for 1 year.
Apart from that you can schedule the backups and have them sent off-site to Dropbox, Amazon S3, Rackspace Cloud, an FTP server, or your email. Or download them right to your desktop.
Pricing:
Personal (2 site licenses) for $80
Business (10 site licenses) for $100
Developer (Unlimited licenses) for $150

2. MyRepono

MyRepono isn’t just another service; it’s an offsite backup solution and comes with a free WordPress plugin. MyRepono is a paid backup service, which costs around $5 and backup your whole WordPress site including MySQL database and WordPress files.
This service can be used for any type of site, and it doesn’t matter if the site is powered by WordPress or Joomla or any other CMS.
The MyRepono backup service does have a WordPress plugin, which automates the myRepono API set-up and configuration process, enabling you to setup automated and remote website backups in a matter of minutes.
Pricing: It costs around $5 (per month) plus a few cents for storage.

3. WPMU Snapshot

Snapshot is a simple backup plugin, which allows you to backup the complete WordPress database including posts, pages, comments, taxonomies etc.
The backup can be stored to your Dropbox or Amazon S3 account. It comes with an option to automatically schedule the backups.
On the side note, the plugin is owned by the same guys who run one of the most popular WordPress resource site – WPMU.
Pricing:
The pricing is little different, actually it’s much cheaper than any other backup solutions out there. It costs $19

4. BlogVault

Blogvault is a premium backup service for WordPress, which takes timely backups and monitors your site.
Although, there is not much info available about how it’s better than any other backup service. Though, it does provide features such as Migrate sites, Auto Restore, Highly Secure, Backup history, etc.
Pricing:
Personal Plan for 1 website – $9 / month
Agency Plan for 3 websites – $19 / month
VIP Plan for 7 websites – $39 / month

5. VaultPress

VaultPress is a premium backup & security service owned by Automattic Inc. For those who don’t know anything about Automattic, they are the force behind WordPress.com, JetPack, Gravatar and other awesome tools.
VaultPress provides continuous back and synchronization of every post, comment, media file, revision and dashboard setting across at least two separate cloud services in addition to the Automattic grid, ensuring no loss of content.
I haven’t tried the service personally but have heard a lot of great things about the service. For last few months, bloggers couldn’t been able to try out the service because of the $15 price tag but recently the Automattic folks released a lite plan, which costs $5 per month.
Pricing:
Lite ($5) – Daily backups with 30-day archives.
Basic ($15) – Realtime backup to protech changes as they happen.
Premium ($40) – Security scanning for potential threats.

6. BackWPup

This one doesn’t cost a dime and has been in the market for more than just a few months. The backup files can be used to save your whole installation including /wp-content/ and push them to an external Backup Service.
BackWPup supports S3 services, Microsoft Azure, RackSpaceCloud, Dropbox, SugarSync and FTP Server.
It comes with an option to repair and optimize your MySQL database.

7. WordPress Backup to Dropbox

Directly backups your website database and files to the Dropbox. This plugin comes in very handy, if you just want to make a backup of your site to an external backup solution.
The WordPress backup solution provides an option to schedule your backup to Dropbox with just a few clicks. I haven’t tried the plugin but I would definitely be using this for niche or small websites.
It also comes with a few premium extensions like Notify of backup or Create a zip file of the backup before upload it to Dropbox, which I think is completely worthless I’d rather purchase a complete backup solution like Backup Buddy or Snapshot than spending the money on premium extensions.

8. WP DB Manager

This plugin does a lot of useful stuff – optimize, repair, backup database, restore files, delete backup database, drop/empty tables and run selected queries.
Supports automatic scheduling of backing up, optimizing and repairing of database. This plugin is perfect if you want optimize the database of your WordPress blog and at the same time wants to backup your site.

9. Better WP Security

I have been using Better WP Security for some time now but never noticed that it had an option to backup your database until I did a research for this post.
This is primary a security plugin, so I don’t think it would be suitable for doing backups. But if you’re looking for a security solution, than definitely give this plugin a try.

Conclusion of the collector:-

While all these are great plugins, you can only use one plugin. There’s also some free plugins that you can use to backup your site but the free plugins doesn’t provide the luxury of great support and regular updates.Which is your favorite backup plugin or service?
